Ash Regan urges Anas Sarwar to apologise for Gender Reform support ahead of Labour Conference

ANAS Sarwar should apologise for supporting the Gender Recognition Reform Bill, says Alba Party’s Ash Regan MSP.

The Scottish Labour leader performed a U-Turn on his party’s support for the policy which would have allowed any male to self identify as a woman if it had become law.

Alba Party’s Holyrood leader Ash Regan resigned from her position in the Scottish Government to vote against the Gender proposals which were subsequently deemed unlawful.

Ahead of today’s Scottish Labour Conference in Glasgow Anas Sarwar has now been urged to apologise for his role in supporting the controversial legislation. Mr Sarwar says that “if he knew then what he knows now” about the legislation he would not have voted for it.

Commenting Alba Party Holyrood leader Ash Regan MSP said:

“ Those of us that stood up for the safety, dignity and privacy of women and girls were attacked from across the political spectrum – including from Anas Sarwar’s Scottish Labour Party that whipped its members to vote for the discredited Gender Recognition Reforms.

“ Although it is welcome that Anas Sarwar has now changed his mind on this important issue, it is not credible to claim he wasn’t aware of the inherent dangers to women and girls that the legislation presented when he voted for it.

“ Anas Sarwar has to go further than his uturn on this policy – he should apologise for not standing up for women and girls when the legislation went to the vote in the Scottish parliament.”
